Port Lincoln, located near the southern end of the Eyre Peninsula
Where is Port Lincoln?.

Port Lincoln (34.44S 135.52E) is in the State of South Australia, Australia. Port Lincoln is near the southern end of the Eyre Peninsula. It is about 650 Km by road from Adelaide the capital of South Australia (Australia is a big place).

Port Lincoln is on the shore of Boston Bay which is five times the size of Sydney Harbour (everyone seems to know something about Sydney, Great Barrier Reef and Uluru (Ayers Rock) but not the rest of Australia). Port Lincoln would have become the capital of South Australia but there was no reliable fresh water source (no rivers). However large quantities of underground water have since been discovered. We wash in that and drink rain water.

When was Port Lincoln discovered?.

Port Lincoln was discovered by Captain Matthew Flinders while exploring Australia's southern coastline. His vessel the "Investigator", a converted collier, dropped anchor in Boston Bay in February 1802 and Flinders named the spot Port Lincoln after his native Lincolnshire in England.

What is the population of Port Lincoln?.

Port Lincoln has a population of about 13,000 people.

What is the climate like?.

The Port Lincoln climate is described as Mediterranean (where about in the Mediterranean they don't say) with average max summer temperature about 24.9C and winter 15.6C. We usually get a few days in the high 30's each summer and the occasional day that reaches 40+C. The weather is actually quite mild. We don't get snow in the winter.

What are the Major Industries in the area?.

Port Lincoln is regarded as the largest fishing port in Australia with the largest tonnage of seafood of any port in Australia. The major export fisheries are:- Prawn (called shrimp in the USA), rock lobster, abalone and tuna. There are also a variety of other species such as shark (small species) and scale fish caught in shallow water by hand line and net and deep water trawling. Right now there is a lot of emphasis on trying to maximise the returns from many of these species. Wild caught tuna are penned and fattened for the Japanese Sushimi (raw fish) market. Abalone, kingfish, oyster and mussels are being farmed.

The local agriculture production is mainly grain with most of the farms producing, wheat, barley, canola or lupins. There are some cattle and sheep on some of the properties but there is little return in them these days. The size of farms on Eyre Peninsula range from 1000 -1500 hectares on the lower part of the peninsula, up to 3000 - 4000 hectares to the North and West in the lower rainfall areas.

What is there to see?.

The surrounding coastline has some spectacular scenery. There are also many quiet scenic beaches where you may not see another person.

Sea life abounds. There are colonies of seals and birds, and during the whale season, whales frequent many parts of the coastline.

The Islands surrounding Port Lincoln are well known for White Pointer Sharks. People come from all over the world to see them.

On the land there are many species of beautiful and delicate native plants accompanied by Australia's unique fauna. Kangaroos, emu's, koala's and wombats can be observed in the wild without too much difficulty.

What activities are there?.

Are there any Festivals?.

The Tunarama Festival is held each year over the Australia Day holiday (January 26). It was originally meant to herald the start of the Tuna Season. But over the last few years there have been major changes in the tuna fishery. Most fish caught now go into holding pens and are fattened for the Sushimi market in Japan.

The festival is held on the foreshore lawns, with many free attractions. There is a street procession with elaborate locally made floats, a rodeo, a ball to crown the Festival Ambassador, a spectacular fireworks display from the town jetty and many other activities that give the town a carnival atmosphere.

Unique events like the World Champion Tuna Toss where competitors see who can throw a tuna the furthest have brought news and documentary teams from all over the world. Some of the competitors styles leave a lot to be desired and some spectators have ended up with an armfull of unexpected tuna.

The Tunarama Festival is very popular with both tourist and local alike and attracts visitors from all over Australia and overseas.

The Mediterraneo Festival is a recently introduced event, held annually on Easter Saturday. The theme behind this festival revolves around the climatic similarities and the cultural links that this area has with the Mediterranean and the countries around it.

A section of the fishing wharf at the Lincoln Cove Marina is partitioned off, where food and drink stalls sell a variety of tempting dishes and beverages. This is to a back drop of the Prawn boats, with entertainment from wandering minstrels to choirs on the stage and dancing on the boulevard.

There are marina boat tours, bocce competitions and prawn boat tours. 2001 was the first time the event was held and it is growing in to a significant event.
